Back to UNIPLET Home

While the roots of hosiery machine production in the Czech Republic can be traced all the way back to the era of Tomas Bata in the 1930's, the history of Uniplet officially begins in the year 1949.

In 1949, the production of first small-diameter knitting machines takes place in Trebic-Borovina in what was then ZGK. In 1953, a new factory is built and the company is renamed ZMS. This is the same location where Uniplet is still standing today. ZMS initially started with the production of double-cylinder sock machines.

Through the ensuing years, ZMS would design many successful model lines in response to the changes in yarn technologies. Notables include the Jda 34, DANA 8, DANA US, D3Va, D3Vc, EVA and, last but certainly not least, ANGE. By the mid-1970's, the trademark Uniplet is registered and is becoming well known worldwide, thanks to increasing exports.

Year 1976 marks the creation of Elitex, a concern of textile machinery industry in Czechoslovakia, to which Uniplet would belong until 1990. By this time, Uniplet is considered to be among the top five elite hosiery machine manufacturers in the world. The 1980's mark a continuance of Uniplet's success, with models such as DERA, WERA, NOVA, LUCIA, SABINA and EDIS being introduced. Meanwhile, the ANGE model line starts to show its impact on the hosiery world with the introduction of ANGE 4 and later ANGE 5 series - single-cylinder, six-feed machines. In the next ten years, Uniplet would sell over 3,500 pieces of the ANGE 5 series machines alone.

The 1990's mark a new chapter in the history of Uniplet. The fall of Communism allowed for the creation of a standalone corporation with the name UNIPLET Trebic a.s. in 1991. The transition from state-owned to private company was not an easy one and there were some turbulent times during the transition period. Eventually, Uniplet would become a part of the MONARCH group of companies. Under the newly formed UNIPLET GROUP, a broad sweeping restructuring plan was implemented, aimed at reducing costs, speeding up product development and streamlining production. The fruits of these efforts are now becoming evident.
